History

Set in the heart of North Cornwall in 230 acres of rolling hills and woodland, Ross Cobbledick designated an area of Special Landscape Value in 1992 to construct Bowood Park Golf Club. This land once formed part of a 13th century deer park owned by the Black Prince.

Brian Huggett, Bob Knott and Eddie Connaughton (Advising) were taken on board to design the beautiful USGA specified Par 72 Parkland golf course as we know today.

Ross Cobbledick and family still own the business to date. Nigel, the son of Ross, acts as ‘Managing Director’ and will cater for every need and requirement where possible for your visit. The place oozes with character from the moment you arrive to the time you depart with memories to experience again for when you next come to visit.

The Construction of Bowood Park

Construction of Bowood Park began in 1988 and was completed in time for the official opening in June 1992. Four full years of hard work paid off, resulting in the golf course and clubhouse as we know them today. What stands now is a true reflection of the determination, vision, and expertise of everyone involved from 1988 onward.

What started as a modest idea from Ross Cobbledick—a 9-hole pitch-and-putt—grew into a 230-acre, fully operational 18-hole golf course, complete with clubhouse and hotel facilities. The shell of the main building was constructed by M&A Burt and their team, including Nigel Cobbledick (who appears in several photographs), and was completed in a remarkably short timeframe.

BT Jenkins carried out the groundwork for the golf course, working under the supervision of the design and agronomy professionals previously mentioned. When Bowood Park opened in June 1992, the site looked very different from today—the original “clubhouse” was little more than what is now the professional shop.

The club initially opened with a small team of just ten staff members. Since then, the business has grown steadily, expanding both its facilities and its workforce to a thriving team of over 50 staff. As Bowood Park evolved, so did the buildings, with the most recent major extension being The Bowood Restaurant, completed in 2000.
